Customised Training Programmes

Fed up of wading through long lists of courses from training brokers?

With OTT you can take a different approach

OTT is a training company and not a sales or training brokering outfit. That means our focus is actually on analysing your training needs and meeting it. So put down those lists and contact us and tell us what you want. What could be simpler or more effective for your organisation?

What do we mean by customised training?

Customised training is what can happen when you contact us and describe a training requirement that isn’t covered by one of our standard public, vendor or company programmes. We’ll quiz you about the details, request any more information you might have such as specification documents and will put together a suggested programme which we’ll send to you for review and feedback. Usually that is all that is required.
If it is a very specialist area then we may need further input from you or for one of our trainers to spend time with you whilst the course is being developed. If we can’t meet your need because it is outside our area of expertise then we’ll tell you that.
One of the advantages of customised training is that it can also include an element of consultancy if required. Sometimes you may need advice on purchasing or documentation and procedures etc. Depending on what is involved this may or may not be charged separately. See our solutions section for more information.
Here’s a selection of the sort of things we get asked….
  • we are setting up a calibration lab, we need training and consultancy

  • we're setting up a terminations facility, can you help us

  • we must have this training on these dates when our ROV operators are back in the country

  • we want to include some specific training as part of a major job we're quoting for

  • we need training on specific products and systems

  • we'd like OTDR training but just on using this specific model

  • we need training for a specific job role, they don't need the full City & Guilds course

  • we only have 2 days to spare this training

How many people do I need?

Our usual group size is 6 if practical work is involved. We will go up to 8 or 10 on courses without serious practical work but we discourage larger groups as the quality of the training experience diminishes with increased numbers. We will do smaller groups too but you may find it won’t be cost-effective for you.

Will we still get a training manual?

Yes, of course. Your training manual will be prepared just as for our standard courses and will usually have page numbers and an index. You can also include your own procedures or literature as appendices if you provide us with these.

Where will the course be held?

Your place or one of our hosting centres, or another suitable venue, whatever suits you.

How soon can I have the training?

Our training schedule does get booked up well in advance for much of the year. If you think you may be interested in a training programme then let us know (without commitment) as far in advance as you can, so that we can discuss what is needed and give you an idea of when we would be able to do it. You may need to allow for 3 months until we would have a free slot available.

Won't it be very expensive?

No, we expect you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Many customised courses can be developed by using some of our hundreds of existing modules of training materials, which cover a very wide range of fibre optics and optical networking issues, and so are actually priced at our standard list prices. There is no additional charge for travel expenses.
With training programmes that cover your own specific products, processes or procedures or particularly unusual applications then there is likely to be some charge for development work. Depending how much work is involved and how many people you have to train we will either include that in the price of a bulk order for courses or charge it separately. But you’ll find that the benefits of buying the training you actually want easily outweighs any slight increase in costs compared to a standard course offering from a training broker.

Will we be able to use the training materials ourselves later?

No. In almost all cases copyright remains with OTT. If we agree, in writing, a "development package" with you and you pay the real costs of our development work done on training materials that need to be specific to your products and processes etc and which do not include any of our generic materials, then we would be able to assign you copyright of the modules developed for you. Ask if you would like a quotation for this type of package.

What do I do now?

Jot down your thoughts and parameters and then contact us. It will help us a lot if you can give us a basic description of your intended trainees, their current level of knowledge, job roles and what you want to achieve by training them. Also how many there are and how quickly and where you want them trained.
Why not use this check list:
  • who

  • what

  • why

  • where

  • when

  • how many

Can I send you my requirements online?

Yes, we have developed an online custom course requirements form where you can send us your details along with your specific training requirements, where you would like the training, how many people you would like trained and what time scale you would like the training.
