Click on the links below to reveal the examples of what you could be using superfast broadband for and how other people
are already making use of the internet to meet their own needs.
Margaret, age 77
This is my mum, Margaret, who is 77 and lives 300 miles away from me on the south coast. She is an internet user and when I asked her what the internet means to her, this is what she had to say: “I couldn't be without my computer, it is an absolute godsend and I am lost when it occasionally goes wrong. It enables me to keep in touch with family and friends by email without having large phone bills. I can order the groceries on the internet and have them delivered, freeing up time, and it is especially good when the weather is bad. I do internet banking, and it is good to be able to check the bank balance and to transfer money from one account to another.
The computer is very good for reference purposes you can find all sorts of information on it, it is like a very giant encyclopaedia. It is also good for playing games on such as Bridge. You can learn to use the computer through a government run scheme Learn Direct which I believe is free.”
As her daughter, I’m certainly very glad she has mastered the internet as it means I can keep tabs on her much more easily and
we can have contact most days. We can share and discuss information we find, which has been useful as my Dad has Alzheimers. Mum is
also an avid reader but as holding books open became difficult for her with arthritic hands, she is now a Kindle user too and happily
downloads her books from Amazon on the internet to her Kindle.
Things to do:
In rural areas it is often a struggle to get access to public and other services. Many government and other services are now moving online
but e-government will only work if it is accessible to all of us otherwise we will carry on being under provided for, forgotten and excluded.
These are just a few examples of what you can do:
