What are Optical Networks?

There is more to fibre optics than just cabling, without the transmission systems that light up the fibre then it would be worthless! So, what do you need to know about Optical Networks in order to design optical networks, plan optical networks and manage optical networking projects to deliver on the promise of high capacity, long distance, cost-effective communications systems?

Optical networks now use a range of technologies and building blocks to transport potentially Terabits of data over hundreds of kilometres, without needing to convert the signals back into electronic signals. In addition to point to point links, as may be used for Data Centre Interconnect (DCI) applications, you can also build more complex topologies for Core and Metro networks, Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexer (DWDM) such as highly resilient mesh networks using Wavelength Selective Switches (WSS) in ROADMs (Reconfigurable Optical Add Drop Multiplexers) that direct the different channels of a DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexed) system to different destinations.

Designing optical networks used to be the exclusive domain of the major network equipment manufacturers (NEMs) such as Ciena and Alcatel-Lucent (Nokia), but now you can put together your own cost-effective solutions using 'white-box' building blocks that are readily available from many component and sub-system vendors. You do not need to be locked in to proprietary single vendor systems any more.

OTT certified optical network courses Alternatively, if you want to know enough about Optical Networks to make an informed judgement about different vendors' systems and capabilities then OTT's vendor neutral optical networking certifications will help you with that too, helping you to specify what you want and need, rather than what the suppliers would like you to buy! OTT's training courses have the potential to pay for themselves many, many times over.

OTT's certifications in optical networking have been around for many years and are continually updated with the latest developments in technology and industry trends, based upon an in-depth technical expertise that is rarely found in training companies. Our decades of experience in designing and developing world class training programmes in fibre optics makes the learning relevant and approachable, using case studies, real world scenarios and assignments to bring the subjects to life.
