Help! it's math/s

Whether you call it Maths or Math, a lot of people like to avoid it whenever they can. But if you want to be a Fibre Optic Test Engineer then you’ll enjoy your job more if you are comfortable with some basic math/s. So if your heart sinks when someone says things like coefficients, equations or exponents, then have a look at these resources. It won’t take you long and you’ll soon be a test engineer with new powers!

First up is a light-hearted trip around Math/s island with Pirate Jim as he finds out about basic equations, decimals and powers. This will help you revise some basic key concepts, just in case you weren’t listening back when you were a kid in school. Click the full screen icon at the top right of the treasure map to begin.

The National Numeracy Challenge helps adults learn the maths needed for everyday life. The Challenge is fun and relaxed with everyday maths you can really use. Once you score 80 or more on the Challenge Check-Up you can print a certificate or claim a digital badge to show that you have the essentials of numeracy.

Citizen Maths is a free online course. Citizen Maths is for people who want to improve their grasp of maths, and become more confident in using maths at work and in life. It helps you learn maths in a new way. Instead of abstract routines, the course uses practical problems to help you grasp some “powerful ideas” in maths.

If you are starting out at a higher level or looking to take your math/s skills further then OpenLearn, part of the Open University, offers a range of free short courses at different levels so you can fill in any gaps in your knowledge.
